Curtain Cleaning and What to Keep in Mind

Curtain Cleaning and What to Keep in Mind

Over the years, curtains accumulate dust, odors, and other residues from the air in the room. Professional curtain cleaning removes deep-seated deposits, cares for delicate fabrics, and helps extend the life of your curtains.

Why Your Curtains Need More Care Than You Think

Curtains are much more than just decoration. They create a cozy atmosphere, provide privacy, improve room acoustics, and influence the overall feel of a home. At the same time, they are among the textiles that are often overlooked in everyday life.

While we wash clothes, bedding, and other home textiles regularly, curtains often hang for years on end. Yet it’s not just the fabrics themselves that benefit from regular cleaning, the indoor climate does too.

Curtains do more every day than you might think

Curtains not only create a cozy atmosphere and provide privacy, they also act as a natural filter. Thanks to their large surface area, they absorb dust, pollen, and odors from the air in the room, thereby contributing to a more pleasant living environment.

Over time, however, these very particles accumulate deep within the fabric. At the same time, curtains are constantly exposed to sunlight, humidity, and their own weight. UV radiation, in particular, causes fibers and colors to age over the years. In addition, natural fibers such as cotton, linen, or viscose react to moisture and can therefore change slightly. The constant strain from their own weight can also affect their shape and fit.

To keep curtains looking beautiful and well-maintained for as long as possible, regular cleaning is important. This not only removes deep-seated deposits and odors but also refreshes the fabrics, restoring their ability to breathe.

What to Keep in Mind When Cleaning Curtains

Curtains are made of delicate fabrics that change over the years due to sunlight, humidity, and daily use. For this reason, slight changes may become visible after cleaning.

Depending on the material, curtains may shrink slightly. This is because curtains are stretched and pulled during production. If left hanging for a long time, the fibers may also relax due to moisture.

The following non-binding guidelines apply to potential shrinkage, depending on the material:

  • Synthetics: approx. 1–2%
  • Silk: approx. 1–3%
  • Cotton: approx. 1–4%
  • Viscose: approx. 3–5%
  • Linen: approx. 5–7%

Stains or discoloration, as well as age- and UV-related changes in the material that were previously concealed by dust, nicotine, or other deposits, may also become visible during cleaning.

These changes are inherent to the material and do not constitute a defect in the cleaning process.

Why is it worth having your curtains professionally cleaned?

Curtains are often made of delicate or high-quality fabrics that cannot simply be washed in a washing machine. Depending on the material, different methods are used, ranging from wet cleaning and dry cleaning to gentle washing.

Before each treatment, we assess which method is best suited for the specific fabric. The curtains are then professionally cleaned, carefully pressed or ironed, and delivered while still hanging. This minimizes wrinkles as much as possible, allowing the curtains to be hung back up immediately.

How often should curtains be cleaned?

How often cleaning is recommended depends on usage and location.

As a general guideline, we recommend:

  • Living spaces: about every 2 to 3 years
  • Households with people who have allergies: every 1 to 2 years
  • Kitchens or households with smokers: more frequently, depending on the level of exposure
  • Hotels, restaurants, offices, or doctors’ offices: regularly as part of a hygiene plan

Conclusion

Curtains do more every day than meets the eye. They filter dust from the air, create a pleasant atmosphere, and contribute to the comfort of your home. At the same time, they are constantly exposed to light, humidity, and dirt, causing them to change naturally over time.

Professional cleaning not only removes dust and odors but also ensures that the fabrics are cared for as gently as possible. Even though changes due to material and age can never be completely ruled out, professional cleaning helps extend the life of your curtains and makes your home feel noticeably fresher again.
